Gardiners Reserve is a large, open reserve in Burwood run by the City of Monash, with off-leash space alongside the Gardiners Creek Trail and a set of sporting pitches that carry their own, more specific rules. It is a solid pick for a dog that wants a proper run plus a walk along the creek trail in the same visit.
The rules. Off-leash is allowed across most of the reserve, but dogs must go on-leash within 10 metres of the Gardiners Creek Trail itself. Dogs are not permitted at any time on the synthetic pitch or the southern-most turf pitch, and the northern pitch is off-limits to dogs during organised sport or training sessions. Off-leash dogs need to stay under effective control and return immediately when called, and it is worth carrying a lead at all times in case you need to clip on quickly near the trail or the pitches.
What's there. There is an upgraded playground near the Octavia Court entry, open turf for fetch, and two sporting pavilions. The reserve connects directly to the paved Gardiners Creek Trail, a shared path used by walkers and cyclists.

Getting there. The reserve is accessed via Sixth Avenue or Octavia Court, Burwood, off Warrigal Road or Toorak Road/Burwood Highway. Street parking is available on both streets. Tram route 75 stops a short walk away on Burwood Highway, and bus routes along Warrigal Road also pass close by.
Nearby with the dogs. There are a few cafes with outdoor seating along Burwood Highway, near Deakin University, worth a coffee stop after the walk, confirm their dog policy on the day. For an overnight stay, Quest Burwood East is a pet-friendly option a short drive away, check their current pet fees and room restrictions at booking.
Saturday mornings and weekday evenings from about 5pm to 7pm are the busiest, mostly local residents plus sports training and matches on the pitches. For a quieter visit with more room to let your dog range, aim for a weekday late morning or early afternoon. Good for active dogs that enjoy a mix of open turf and a proper trail walk.
