Gardiners Reserve Dog Park

Gardiners Reserve is a large open reserve in Burwood with off-leash space alongside the Gardiners Creek Trail and a set of sporting pitches that carry their own, tighter rules. It is an unfenced, council-managed reserve rather than an enclosed dog yard, and its strength is the combination: a proper run on open turf plus a paved creek-trail walk in the one visit.

Off leash status

Off-leash applies across most of the reserve with dogs under effective control and returning immediately when called, but the exclusions matter. Dogs go back on lead within 10 metres of the Gardiners Creek Trail itself, are never permitted on the synthetic pitch or the southern-most turf pitch, and the northern pitch is off limits during organised sport or training. The creek banks are steep and can crumble, so keep the lead handy there. This is an open parkland without fencing, so a dog with patchy recall is better suited to an enclosed park.

Max: work out which pitch is which before you unclip. From a distance the exclusion zones are not obvious, and evening training can start with little warning.

The vibe

Sporty and spacious, mostly drawing local residents with an upgraded playground near the Octavia Court entry and two sporting pavilions. Saturday mornings and weekday evenings from about 5pm to 7pm are the busy stretches, when training and matches fill the pitches. A weekday late morning or early afternoon gives the most room to let a dog range across the open turf.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is accessed via Sixth Avenue or Octavia Court, off Warrigal Road or the Toorak Road and Burwood Highway corridor, with street parking on both entry streets. Tram route 75 on Burwood Highway stops a short walk away and buses along Warrigal Road pass close by, so it is reachable without a car.

Close by with the dogs

Gardiners Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area continues the same creek corridor if you want a bushier stretch, and the Ferndale Gardiners Creek and Anniversary Trails loop at Ashburton makes a longer on-lead walk. The Beanstalk Cafe is a dog-friendly coffee stop for afterwards.
