Emerald Lake Park

Emerald Lake Park sits at the end of Emerald Lake Road in the Dandenong Ranges: two lakes, a stretch of bushland and fern gullies, with the Puffing Billy steam line running through the middle of it. Dogs are welcome on lead across the whole park, and the park circuit runs about 3.4 km at an easy grade, roughly fifty minutes at a wander. The one rule that catches people out is the water: two lakes in front of you and a wading pool beside the playground, and none of it is open to dogs.

Leash status

Cardinia Shire Council manages the park and requires dogs on leash at all times, with no off-leash exercise permitted anywhere in the grounds. Waste goes in the bins, which are actually provided here, unlike some Dandenongs sites. Dogs are excluded from the water and the wading pool area, and they must stay on the formed tracks to protect the plantings and limit erosion. Do not feed the ducks, which council notes makes them sick and aggressive. Horses and trail bikes are not allowed, and wood or charcoal barbecues are banned outright, though free electric ones are provided.

The walk

Lake Treganowan is the big one, with open lakeside paths and the station end crowds, while the Lake Nobelius loop at the far end is the shadier, quieter option that suits a warm day. Parts of the lakeside circuits are flat and firm enough for wheelchairs and prams; the bushland tracks beyond them are rougher underfoot. Nobelius Heritage Park adjoins the precinct if you want to extend, and the Emerald to Cockatoo Trail picks up from the same corner of town if the loop leaves the dog wanting more.

Fire is the serious hazard here. Bushland areas and walking trails close on days of Extreme fire danger and Total Fire Ban, and the whole park can close on Catastrophic days, so check the rating before committing to the drive. The other hazard is auditory: live steam trains mean level crossings, whistles and sudden noise for a dog that has not met a locomotive. If yours is sound sensitive, start at the Treganowan end and walk away from the station first.

Pepsi: Two lakes and not a paddle in either. Bring water and a bowl, take the shady Nobelius loop, and save the swimming for somewhere it is allowed.

Getting there and parking

Entry is free but parking is not. Two main car parks off Emerald Lake Road sit near the Puffing Billy station and beside Lake Treganowan, with card-only ticket machines: two dollars for up to two hours, eight dollars for the day. Disability permit holders and motorcycles park free, and annual passes run forty dollars, free for Cardinia Shire residents. Hours are 6am to 8pm in daylight saving and 6am to 6pm otherwise. By public transport, take the train to Belgrave and the 695 bus to Emerald township, or ride Puffing Billy itself to Lakeside station, which even runs designated Dog Express experiences if you want the train to be the outing.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the calm version of this park, before the station crowds and the playground build. Autumn gives the best colour on the introduced trees around Lake Treganowan, and winter mornings bring mist over the water, but always check the fire danger rating between December and March.
