Tarrango Ranch Bed & Breakfast

Tarrango Ranch is a small farm stay on the edge of Yarra Junction, about an hour east of Melbourne, where the host takes dogs by prior arrangement. It is a couple or small family kind of place: a cottage on a working rural property with a fenced garden, farm animals about, and dark night skies rather than town lights. The walking happens nearby, on the Warburton rail trail and in the state forest around the valley.

Dogs are welcome by arrangement only. Book the pet in when you book the room; the listings mention a $50 fee per pet, and turning up with an unannounced dog risks a $200 charge, so this is not a casual bring-along. Indoors, dogs stay off the furniture and out of the bedrooms unless supervised. The fenced garden gives them room off lead on the property, but anywhere else on the farm they should be on lead, out of respect for the resident animals. Confirm fence lines, garden boundaries and any size limits when you book, because the public listings do not spell all of this out.

Pepsi: A fenced garden at a farm stay is worth questioning before you arrive. Ask whether the fence is secure against everything on the other side of it, not just tidy looking, because rural properties often run stock nearby.

The place

The setting is open farmland with rural views, and Yarra Junction township is minutes away for supplies. Mount Donna Buang is close enough for a bigger day out, and the upper Yarra Valley's wineries and forest drives are all within an easy drive.

Getting there and parking

The property is on Old Tarrango Road, Yarra Junction, with free on site parking straight off the main road into town. You will want a car here; the trailheads and cellar doors are not walkable from the gate.

Out and about nearby

The Warburton River Walk is a flat, dog friendly stretch along the Yarra, good for a morning loop. La La Falls Walk in the forest above Warburton is a short, shaded climb best leashed. Wesburn Park Dog Off Leash Area a few minutes up the road gives dogs a proper off lead run, and Doon Reserve Caravan Park is the alternative pet friendly base in the same township.
