Warburton River Walk

The Warburton River Walk follows the Yarra through the middle of Warburton, about 72 km east of Melbourne in the Yarra Ranges. It is a flat 5.1 km circuit, on lead the whole way, and the river running alongside is the reason to bring the dog. Mountain ash and tree ferns shade a good part of it, which is unusual for a walk this close to a town centre.

The dog setup

Roughly 5.1 km as a loop, graded easy, and most people take an hour to an hour and a half. The route crosses several footbridges, including the Warburton Swing Bridge, and moves between made paths near the town centre and softer dirt track along the riverbank. It is easy to shorten or lengthen depending on how far the dog wants to go, which makes it a reliable option for old dogs and young ones alike.

Leash status

Yarra Ranges Council manages the reserve and dogs are welcome on lead for the full circuit. There is no off-leash section on the river walk itself. Council rules also keep dogs five metres clear of playgrounds and public barbecue areas, which matters here because the loop passes several.

Water and hazards

Shallow gravelly edges along the Yarra suit a supervised paddle on a warm day. The catch is that this river rises fast: after heavy rain the advice is to keep out of the water for a couple of days, and a swollen Yarra moves quicker than it looks. Pick an entry point where the bank shelves gently rather than one where it drops away, and keep bins in mind, because rubbish points are spaced out along some stretches of the reserve.

Getting there and parking

Warburton is about 90 minutes from Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway and then the Warburton Highway. Parking sits behind the town centre and along the highway, and it fills on sunny weekends. By public transport, take the Lilydale line then bus 683, and check current services with Public Transport Victoria before you rely on it.

When to go

Sunny autumn and spring weekdays are the sweet spot: shaded path, cool river air and room on the footbridges. Summer weekends fill the town, and the river runs highest and fastest in the weeks after big rain through the ranges.

While you are out there

Pair the river with La La Falls Walk, a short shaded forest climb on the town's edge, or a longer stretch of the old railway line on the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.
