La La Falls Walk

La La Falls is a short waterfall walk in the state forest above Warburton, about 2.7 km return along Four Mile Creek to a fern lined cascade. Dogs are welcome on lead here because it is state forest, not national park, and that distinction matters: the Yarra Ranges National Park that adjoins this country does not allow dogs at all.

The walk. AllTrails measures it at 2.7 km return and grades it moderate, roughly an hour to an hour and a half with a dog. It climbs steadily rather than steeply, following the creek through cool, damp, fern filled forest, with rocky and slippery sections closer to the falls. There is a bench at the base if you want to sit while the dog drips.

The rules. Forest Fire Management Victoria manages this section of Yarra State Forest and dogs are permitted on lead. Keep them on it, particularly on the narrow upper sections where passing walkers have nowhere to step aside. There are no bins at the trailhead or on the track, so carry waste out.

Water. Four Mile Creek runs alongside most of the walk and is the obvious drink stop. The falls themselves are best after rain and can be a trickle in a dry summer.

Hazards. The track gets muddy and slick after rain, and the rocky steps near the falls are the part where people come unstuck. Sturdy shoes for you, and a shorter lead for the dog on the descent.

Getting there. From Warburton, follow Park Road and Old Warburton Road to Irruka Road. There is a small free gravel car park at the trailhead. Search for the La La Falls car park rather than the falls themselves, since map apps will otherwise send you somewhere else. No toilets at the start; the nearest are in the Warburton township. Public transport is impractical, so drive.

Nearby with the dogs. The flat, riverside Warburton River Walk is the easy alternative on the valley floor if the climb is too much.

When to go. Winter and spring, a few days after decent rain, when the falls are actually falling. Mornings and weekdays keep you clear of the bottlenecks on the narrow track. Good for nervous swimmers who would rather wade than swim.
