Red Dog Retreat is a pair of self-contained cottages set in rainforest on eighteen acres on the range above Kangaroo Valley, at 269b Tourist Road near Beaumont on the NSW South Coast hinterland. Dogs at the Red Dog Retreat
Dogs are welcome at both Red Dog Cottage and The Fernery, each sleeping four across two bedrooms. An additional fee of $50 per dog applies, and you need to disclose your dog when you book rather than arriving with one unannounced. There is no stated size limit, but supervision is the house rule: with the grounds unfenced, dogs are watched at all times rather than let out to roam. Wildlife, wombats, wallabies and birdlife, moves through the property, which is part of the appeal and the reason the lead stays on until you know how your dog reacts.
The cottages
Both cottages are rustic and self-contained, each sleeping four across two bedrooms, with wood-burning stoves for cool nights and verandahs over the surrounding bush. On-site parking comes with the property and the drive up the range is scenic in its own right. This is a sit-on-the-verandah-with-the-dog kind of place rather than a manicured lawn-and-garden stay.
The valley around you
Kangaroo Valley village and Berry, both with dog-friendly outdoor dining, are about fifteen minutes away, and the Friendly Inn Hotel and Albert Street Caffe and Bar are the reliable dog-welcoming stops in each. For genuine off-lead time, head to Shoalhaven Heads Off Leash Dog Park or the sand north of the surf club at Seven Mile Beach, roughly twenty-five minutes further. The Glenmack Park in the valley itself is the caravan-park fallback if both cottages are booked.
