The Friendly Inn is the pub in Kangaroo Valley, a historic country hotel at 159 Moss Vale Road with a big beer garden that looks out to the escarpment. It is genuinely set up for dogs, with a large covered outdoor area, which is what makes it the default meeting spot for locals walking their dogs.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome out the front, on the deck and through the large beer garden. There is a covered marquee area at the back with heaters, so a wet or cold day does not rule you out. Keep your dog on a lead and settled. Water bowls are usually out in the outdoor areas, but pack your own in case.

Good to know. It is a classic country pub menu, with schnitzels, steak sandwiches and pub staples the regular orders, plus live music at times. The beer garden view is the draw, and it gets busy on weekends and holiday weekends.

Getting there. It is on Moss Vale Road in the centre of the village, with a free car park on site and additional free street parking along the main road. Both fill quickly on busy afternoons.

The garden is open and near the road, so keep the lead short when you first arrive and give a nervous dog a corner table away from the through-traffic.

Nearby with the dog. The village street is walkable for a post-lunch loop, and the Kangaroo River access points and Bendeela Recreation Area nearby are good for a longer on-lead walk to burn energy first.
