The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn is a historic gastropub on the corner of Stanley and Sidon Streets at South Bank, next to Griffith University's campus and the parklands. For dog owners the appeal is the sprawling, shaded beer garden, which takes dogs, with a public dog water fountain only a few metres away.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden and the front footpath seating, not in the indoor dining rooms. The outdoor area is spacious and shaded, so it is easy to tuck a leashed dog beside your table. Staff are dog-friendly and often bring water bowls, and there is a public dog water fountain just outside.

Good to know. It is a South Bank landmark trading since the early 1900s, doing casual pub food with pride, think beef Wellington, lamb shank and standard pub grub. It opens daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, generally from late morning.

Getting there. It is minutes from the South Bank ferry terminal and busway station, so public transport is the simplest option. Street parking on Sidon and Stanley Streets is limited and paid, with a paid lot next to the venue.

Nearby with the dogs. The South Bank Parklands sit immediately alongside, with extensive on-leash paths, gardens and the riverside boardwalk for a walk before or after. Arbour View Park nearby is another green space to stretch the legs, on-leash.

When to go. Weekday lunches and mid-afternoons are the quietest; weekends and event days fill the garden. Good for a calm dog who will settle in a shady corner while you eat.
