Orleigh Dog Park

Orleigh Dog Park is the fenced off-leash area inside Orleigh Park, on the Brisbane River at the West End end of Aberdeen Terrace. It is one of inner-city Brisbane's busiest riverside off-leash spots: a securely fenced grassy run with big Moreton Bay figs for shade and a breeze off the water. The catch is honest in the reviews, in dry spells or after heavy use the grass thins and it can get dusty underfoot.

The rules. The off-leash area is the fenced enclosure only. Everywhere else in Orleigh Park, including the walkways, playground and picnic lawns, dogs must be on-leash. Carry a leash at all times, keep your dog under effective voice control inside the fence, and leash and remove any dog that turns aggressive. Pick up after your dog; this is council enforced.

What's there. Fully fenced and gated, with mature shade trees, bench seating for owners, water taps and bowls, and dog waste bags. The shade is a real asset in a Brisbane summer.

Getting there. Street parking runs along Aberdeen Terrace and the surrounding streets and gets competitive on weekends. By bus, the 192 along Gladstone Road drops a short walk away. Note the Orleigh Park ferry terminal is permanently closed, so if you are coming by CityCat you will land at West End terminal and walk the riverside path (on-leash) to the park.

Watch-outs. After rain the ground turns muddy and worn, and in dry weather it gets dusty. On hot days come for the shade and bring water regardless of the taps.

When to go. Weekday mid-mornings, roughly 9 to 11:30am, are the calmest. Weekend mornings and the weekday after-work window of about 4:30 to 6pm are the busiest and most social, which is great for confident dogs and a lot for timid ones. Good for a well-socialised dog that likes a crowd and a riverside run.
