Orleigh Dog Park

Orleigh Dog Park is the fenced off-leash enclosure inside Orleigh Park, on the Brisbane River at the West End end of Aberdeen Terrace. It is one of inner-city Brisbane's most-used riverside dog runs: securely fenced, shaded by big Moreton Bay figs, and cooled by whatever breeze is coming off the water. The honest catch, which regulars will tell you too, is that in dry spells or after heavy use the grass thins and the ground turns dusty.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone is the fenced enclosure only. Everywhere else in Orleigh Park, including the riverside walkways, playground and picnic lawns, dogs stay on lead. Carry a leash at all times, keep your dog under effective voice control inside the fence, and leash up and leave if a dog turns aggressive. Picking up after your dog is council-enforced, and bins and bags are supplied. There is no separate small-dog yard, so it suits well-socialised dogs comfortable mixing sizes.

The vibe

Inside the fence you get mature shade trees, bench seating, water taps and bowls, and a strong local community feel. The shade is a genuine asset through a Brisbane summer. Ground conditions swing with the weather: muddy and worn after rain, dusty in dry spells. Weekday mid-mornings are the calm window; weekend mornings and the after-work stretch from about 4:30 to 6pm are the busiest and most social, which confident dogs love and timid dogs may find a lot.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Aberdeen Terrace and the surrounding streets and gets competitive on weekends. The 192 bus along Gladstone Road drops a short walk away. The Orleigh Park ferry terminal is permanently closed, so CityCat users land at West End terminal and walk the riverside path to the park, on lead until you are through the gate.

While you're out there

The Brisbane River West End riverside walk extends the outing along the water, and the Dutton Park fenced dog park is an alternative enclosure up the river. For a coffee with the dog, Bright Eyes Coffee is close by, and the Anzac Park fenced dog park at Toowong sits across the river.
