The Hold

The Hold is the galleon-themed bar and restaurant on Sydney Road, a minute off the Corso and three minutes' walk from Manly Wharf. It serves tall burgers, tacos and a serious drinks list until late, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, which makes it a natural stop after a wharf or beachside walk.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor and footpath seating at the front, and the crew is happy to bring out a water bowl on request. The themed indoor dining room is people and certified assistance dogs only. Keep the lead on and your dog tucked in under the table; Sydney Road carries a lot of foot traffic, especially from Friday onwards.

Worth knowing

The menu leans hearty: gourmet burgers including a strong vegan list, cauliflower wings, loaded fries and tacos, with craft beer, spirits and cocktails behind the bar and live music some nights. Hours are 3pm to midnight Tuesday to Thursday and midday to midnight Friday to Sunday, with Monday closed, so this is a lunch-and-later venue rather than a breakfast stop. The room is lively and loud rather than quiet, suiting dogs that settle easily amid bustle.

Getting there and parking

The address is 24 Sydney Road, Manly, just off the Corso. The Manly ferry from Circular Quay and the fast ferries land at the wharf a few minutes away, with local buses up Sydney Road. If you drive, paid parking is at the Central Avenue and Whistler Street car parks.

While you're out there

The Corso runs straight down to Manly Beach for an on-lead promenade stroll; the main surf beach itself is off-limits to dogs. A few minutes further, Las Palmas Manly takes dogs in its West Esplanade garden and Felons Brewing Co. Manly welcomes them across the waterfront areas.
