Ernest Delicatessen

Ernest Delicatessen is a contemporary European-style deli at 48/50 Mount Barker Road, right on Hahndorf's main strip, and dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front. It trades 8:30am to 3pm (2pm on Monday and Sunday), closed Tuesdays, which makes it a quick and easy stop while walking the town with a dog.

The dog setup

The outdoor seating at the front is where dogs belong here. The tables sit directly on the main-street footpath, so a dog needs to be comfortable with people and other dogs passing close by; keep the lead short and the dog at your table. Water bowls appear sometimes but are not a given, so pack a collapsible bowl. Staff are generally happy to accommodate a well-behaved dog, and there is usually room for a car-friendly short stop rather than a long settle.

The sandwich menu is the draw: a mortadella and pesto sourdough sanga, a deli meat sandwich built on shaved Ninos meats with fior di latte and pistachio, and a salumi plate with focaccia and pickles when you want to share. Coffee is strong on the list, and there are local wines, beer and cocktails if lunch stretches. A shelf of Adelaide Hills deli goods covers the take-home run.

Getting there and parking

Street parking on Mount Barker Road fills fast on weekends. The car park behind the Hahndorf Academy and spaces on Pine Avenue are a short walk and usually easier, which matters when you are walking a dog in.

Close by with the dogs

The main street is an easy on-leash stroll with benches outside most shops, and the Balhannah dog park is 5 to 10 minutes away by car, with a fenced loop and river access for a swim.
