Dayboro Sugar Mill

Dayboro Sugar Mill occupies a former mill building on Williams Street in the middle of Dayboro, and it has become one of the most dog-welcoming eateries in the Moreton Bay hinterland. The kitchen covers breakfast, lunch and dinner from 11am, with a rustic menu of burgers, loaded fries and corn ribs, Wolff Coffee Roasters coffee behind the bar, and live music most weekends. True to the town's country character, the venue is famously horse friendly too, with hitching spots at the back.

The dog setup

Dogs on leads are welcome in the large beer garden at the back, and they are also allowed in the bar area from Monday to Saturday. Water bowls are usually out in the outdoor area, though on a warm Queensland afternoon it is worth carrying a backup. The garden is spacious and partly shaded, so there is room to give a dog space to settle rather than squeezing past other tables.

Weekends often bring live music, which makes the garden a lively place to spend an afternoon. That energy suits confident, social dogs; a noise-shy dog will do better on a weekday, when the room is calmer and tables at the edge are easier to get. The kitchen leans hearty rather than fine dining, and there is a gluten free bun option for burgers.

Getting there and parking

The mill sits in the main street part of the township, about 45 minutes north-west of Brisbane. Street parking along Williams Street is plentiful and the path from the front of the venue into the garden is level, so arriving with a dog is easy. Dayboro is also a common stop on a scenic drive through the Samford Valley.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-leash run before lunch, the Mervyn Kenman Park fenced dog park is a couple of minutes away, with separate large and small dog enclosures, agility gear and a water tap. Dayboro Bakery and Silverwood Cafe on the same strip are both dog-friendly backup options, and The Dayboro Drop is next door if the mill is full.

Pepsi: The beer garden is at its best on a live-music afternoon, but if your dog startles at noise, aim midweek and take a table near the fence line.
