The Duke of Brunswick Hotel

The Duke of Brunswick, the Dob to locals, is a corner pub at 207 Gilbert Street in Adelaide's south-west CBD that has made dogs part of the business model. There is a dedicated dog menu called Poochy Bites with treats and grain-free meatballs, water bowls at the ready, and a monthly Dog Day that turns the garden into a dog park with a bar. Doors open 11:30am daily, running to 9:30pm most nights and 11:30pm Friday and Saturday.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the front outdoor seating and the plant-filled back courtyard the pub calls the Secret Garden, both shaded and comfortable. Under SA licensing law only assistance dogs go inside, so plan on outside. Keep your dog leashed. If your dog has a taste for the good stuff, the Poochy Bites menu means they eat as well as you do.

The kitchen

The unusual thing here is that the whole kitchen is accredited 100 per cent gluten-free by Coeliac Australia, so the chicken parmis, arancini and burgers are safe for coeliac diners without any negotiation. There are vegan options too. It is a casual, community-feeling pub rather than a polished gastropub, and on the second Sunday of each month the Dog Day raises money for animal welfare causes with treats, regulars and a garden full of dogs.

Getting there and a walk after

Free street parking is around the surrounding blocks but fills on evenings; the tram along King William Street is a short walk east. The South Parklands start one block south: Veale Gardens is a formal on-leash stroll among rose beds, while the all-dog park in the South Parklands covers the off-leash run. Time a visit for the second Sunday of the month and the whole garden is dogs, which is the easiest day for a social dog to make friends.
