General Havelock

The General Havelock, the Hav to regulars, has been pouring on Hutt Street since 1873, and it now leans into dog-friendliness harder than almost any pub in the city. Dogs are treated as proper guests here rather than a grudging exception, with a courtyard set aside for them and even a menu of their own.

The dog setup

Dogs settle with you in the covered outdoor dining areas and the beer-garden courtyard. The indoor bar and dining rooms are off limits under standard South Australian food rules, apart from assistance dogs, and dogs need to stay leashed and under control while you eat. The kitchen keeps a dedicated dog menu, treats and a doggie bowl among it, and staff are used to water bowls appearing on the courtyard floor without anyone having to ask.

The vibe

Beyond the dog focus it is a classic pub: big schnitzels, Guinness and Coopers on tap, happy hour pricing and a fireplace that earns its keep through Adelaide's cooler months. Live music and big screens for the football fill out the week, and the crowd is local and easygoing. The courtyard is the natural base when you have a dog with you.

Getting there and parking

The pub sits at 162 Hutt Street in the east end of the city. Metered street parking runs along Hutt Street and the side streets, so check the signs for time limits, and Adelaide Metro buses run straight along Hutt Street if you would rather leave the car. The South Parklands are only a few minutes on foot, which makes it easy to tire a dog out before or after lunch.

Close by with the dogs

A pre-pint run works well at the All Dog Park in the south parklands, a few minutes' walk away. Along Hutt Street itself, The Flinders Street Project covers the coffee end of the strip, and if the Hav is packed, The Elephant British Pub is the city's other long-standing dog pub.
