The Yarra Hotel is a historic local pub at 293-297 Johnston Street, Abbotsford, dating to 1855, with a relaxed, community feel and a large undercover beer garden. It is dog-friendly, and the beer garden is where dogs go.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the big, partly covered beer garden, on lead, not in the main bar. There is some footpath seating out front, but the beer garden is the spot. Water bowls are provided. A fireplace makes the garden usable year-round, which is a genuine plus in a Melbourne winter.

Good to know. Solid traditional pub meals and daily specials, plus trivia nights, open mic and live music, so it can get lively. Mid-week or a weekend lunch gives you more room in the garden.

Getting there. 293-297 Johnston Street, 3067. Street parking on Johnston Street and side streets - read the signage. The 109 tram runs nearby and Victoria Park Station is close.

Nearby with the dogs. Victoria Park and its fenced off-leash oval are minutes away on foot for a pre- or post-pub run, and the Yarra Bend parklands sit close by for a longer trail walk.
