Windsor Off leash dog area

This off-leash area covers the open, unfenced grass of the Kedron Brook floodway near Northey Street in Windsor, the wider space that surrounds the separate fenced dog park next door. Brisbane City Council lists the floodway stretch as off-leash territory, and it is a favourite with locals who want room to run rather than a small enclosed yard.

The rules

Dogs are only permitted off-leash within the designated zone and must be under effective control at all times, which means they should return when called even with bikes and other dogs passing. Stay on lead on the surrounding streets and paths, clean up after your dog, and keep vaccinations current.

What's there

This is open floodway parkland rather than a fenced enclosure: plenty of room to range, a linear path along the brook, and bins provided along the way. Shade is limited and no barrier separates the off-leash zone from the water, so bring your own water because taps are not guaranteed this far along the reserve. For a secured run, the Northey Street Park Fenced Dog Park sits right beside it with shaded shelter, lighting and basic agility equipment.

Pepsi: it is the unfenced option, so I keep the long line handy until my recall is warm. The brook is right there and my dog always finds it.

Getting there

Reach it via Lutwyche Road or Windsor Road, with parking near the netball courts and adjacent park. The Kedron Brook bike path runs straight through, so it is an easy add-on for anyone already walking or riding the floodway. Windsor train station is a short walk for those coming from the inner north.

Close by with the dogs

When to go

Early morning or evening is best in the warmer months, when the open ground is not baking and the brook path is quieter. Mosquitoes are active near the water at dawn and dusk, so pack repellent for yourself. The exposed floodway position makes midday summer visits a poor idea for thick-coated dogs.
