Broadmeadows Valley Park (Barry Road) Dog Off Leash Area

The Barry Road off-leash area is the big open-grass section of Broadmeadows Valley Park in Westmeadows, following the Moonee Ponds Creek corridor. It is unfenced and expansive, which is exactly why locals choose it over a small enclosure: dogs get a proper run along the valley rather than laps of a yard.

The dog setup

Dogs can be off-leash across the designated area but must stay under effective voice and hand control, with a lead carried at all times. The area is not fenced, so it only suits dogs with reliable recall. On school days the zone reverts to on-leash between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, so mornings and evenings are the off-leash windows for working owners on weekdays.

Worth knowing

Dogs must be registered with the council and wear a current tag, and waste has to be picked up and binned; bags and rubbish bins are provided on site. Keep dogs off the playgrounds and out of the creek itself, and leash up on the shared concrete paths that run through the park. The creek corridor is a wildlife route, so interrupt any chasing early.

The entrance and car park off Barry Road near Malmsbury Drive are wheelchair accessible, with free off-street parking. Most visitors drive; a few bus routes run along Barry Road but there is no train nearby.

Max: unfenced and long, with the creek alongside. Great for a fit dog with a working recall, but if yours ignores you past ten metres, the fenced options nearby are the better call.

Afterwards, The Ninth Ave on Western Avenue keeps water bowls out for dogs, and Francis Winifred in Oak Park is a solid brunch stop with dog-friendly outdoor seating.
