Templestowe Reserve off Hawtin Street is a large open community reserve built around sports ovals, giving dogs plenty of room to run off-leash. It is a busy local hub used for sport and recreation, and it is unfenced, so reliable recall is the price of entry.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control off-leash, returning on command. They must be on-leash within 15 metres of playgrounds, BBQ areas and active sporting events, and through the car park. Pick up after your dog; bring your own bags in case dispensers are empty. Confirm the current boundaries on Manningham Council signage on arrival.

What's there. On-site parking, a children's playground, public toilets, BBQ spots and basketball courts. The open grass can get muddy after rain.

Getting there. Access is via Hawtin Street just off Templestowe Road, with dedicated on-site parking. Buses run along surrounding roads such as Anderson Street.

The ovals are unfenced and active with sport on weekends, so keep clear of training and matches and only run off-leash where recall holds.

When to go. Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are the calmest. Sunday mornings, late weekday afternoons and sports-training times are busiest. If your dog is uneasy around organised sport, skip the weekend oval slots.
