Swansea Dog Exercise Area

Swansea Dog Exercise Area is a large, unfenced grass reserve on the Swansea Channel foreshore, beside the boat ramp off Channel Street on Lake Macquarie's channel to the sea. It is leash-free at all times, with open water views and a big flat run for dogs, and it doubles as one of the prettiest places to throw a ball on the Central Coast's northern lakes.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies at all times unless a community event has the reserve booked. There is no fencing anywhere, and the grass runs to open water on one side and a road and carpark on the other, so effective voice control is the entry requirement, not a nice-to-have. Keep dogs clear of the native bird habitat along the foreshore, and pick up waste; Lake Macquarie Council fines run from $275 for uncollected waste and from $330 for dogs off lead in nearby on-leash areas.

What is there and what to watch for

The grass is flat and well kept, with accessible paved paths and the Swansea Boardwalk around the edge, and public toilets sit in the wider reserve. A large free gravel carpark is on site. There are no waste bag dispensers, so bring your own, and no lighting, so it is a daylight park. Seagulls around the boat ramp can be numerous and distracting, and weekends plus sunny mornings bring fishing families to the channel, so the reserve shares its space with boats and rods.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on the western side of Swansea Bridge, reached via the boat ramp entrance off Channel Street. Swansea's main bus stops on the Pacific Highway are within walking distance if you are coming through on public transport.
