Swansea Dog Exercise Area

Swansea Dog Exercise Area is a large, unfenced grass reserve on the Swansea Channel foreshore, right by the boat ramp off Channel Street. It is leash-free at all times, with open water views and plenty of room to run, but the lack of fencing means it only suits dogs with reliable recall.

The rules. Off-leash at all times unless a community event is on. Dogs must stay under effective voice control given the open boundary to the road and water. Keep dogs clear of native bird habitat along the foreshore. Pick up after your dog. Fines apply for both uncollected waste (from $275) and for off-leash dogs in nearby on-leash areas (from $330).

What's there. Flat, well-kept grass with accessible paved paths around the edge. A large free gravel carpark sits on site. There are no waste bag dispensers, so bring your own, and no lighting, so plan for daylight visits. Public toilets are available in the wider reserve.

Getting there. The reserve sits on the western side of the Swansea Bridge, reached via the boat ramp entrance off Channel Street. It is walking distance from the main Swansea bus stops on the Pacific Highway.

Watch-outs. The area borders open water on one side and a road and carpark on the other, with no fence anywhere. Seagulls around the boat ramp can be numerous and may distract dogs. Weekends and sunny mornings bring the biggest crowds, largely fishing families using the channel.

When to go. Weekday mornings are quietest. Good for confident, well-recalled dogs that want space to run; less suited to nervous dogs or ones prone to bolting toward water or traffic.
