Dog's Leg Island

Dog's Leg Island is a tidal sandbank in Swansea Channel, just off Little Pelican on the Lake Macquarie coast. It grows out of the water around low tide and shrinks back with the flood, so a visit here is a tide-planning exercise first and a beach walk second.

The dog setup

This is not a designated off-leash beach. Lake Macquarie City Council requires dogs to be leashed in public places unless an area is specifically signed as off-leash, and the sandbank carries no such listing, so the default here is lead on.

Keep your dog clear of the shorebirds that work the channel flats and well away from fishers and their lines. If you want a guaranteed run, Thomas Humphreys Reserve in Swansea is the nearest confirmed leash-free reserve, and council lists Hams Beach at Swansea Heads and the northern end of Blacksmiths Beach as official off-leash ocean beaches a few minutes away.

The tide is the boss

Access is by wading across from the Little Pelican or Swansea foreshore at low water, or by boat, and the island can be cut off or fully submerged when the channel fills. Check Swansea tide times before you set out and never leave the crossing so late that the water has started to come back.

There are no facilities out on the sand: no water, no shade, no bins and no seating. Pack drinking water for both of you and carry everything back out with you.

Max: low tide, leash on, water packed. The island is a bonus at the end of a wade, not a destination you can count on twice in one day.

Getting there and parking

Park near the Swansea Channel foreshore on the Little Pelican side, where street parking sits within a short walk of the water. The wade itself is short but the channel bottom is soft in patches, so it suits sure-footed dogs and owners more than toddlers or older dogs with stiff hips.
