The Channel Cafe

The Channel Cafe sits at Shop 3, 2 Belmont Street in Swansea, right on the edge of the Swansea Channel where the lake runs out to the ocean. It is an alfresco, water-view cafe with an all-day breakfast and lunch menu, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, which is the spot to aim for anyway when the view is the point.

The dog setup

Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the alfresco seating out front, where you get a direct line of the channel and the boats passing through. Standard cafe manners apply, and near the water it is worth keeping the lead short. Bring a water bowl to be safe rather than expecting one on hand. The cafe is part of the Doggylicious family of dog-friendly venues, so the welcome is genuine rather than incidental.

The vibe and the food

The menu runs all day from 7am to 2pm, seven days a week: eggs benedict with bacon, french toast, fish and chips and generous portions are what regulars call out, with Sevenmiles coffee for the cup and takeaway coffee if you are passing through with the dog already mid-walk. Reviewers consistently mention the welcoming staff and the view of the lake.

Getting there and parking

Belmont Street is on the Swansea side of the Swansea Bridge, with free on-site and street parking close by. The channel foreshore is a short walk from the door for a stretch of the legs before or after eating.

For a run off the lead, Swansea's dog exercise area is the local option, and Marks Point's dog exercise beach is down the lake if you want sand under paws. If you are making a morning of the southern lake, Boffee Cafe at Caves Beach and Simply Yumm are the other dog-friendly cafe stops close by.
