Belmont Dog Park

Belmont Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash park tucked under the Settlement Road bridge on Barrabool Road, right on the edge of the Barwon River. The defining feature is the split layout: a large active area for confident dogs and a separate passive area for small, shy or older dogs, so you are not forced to mix a nervous dog in with the boisterous crowd.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash inside the fence but must be under effective voice control, and they go back on-leash the moment you step outside the perimeter. Clean up after your dog; bag dispensers are provided on-site. Watch the gates and let your dog settle before releasing into the main area.

What's there. The park is well kitted out for a council off-leash space: a sand pit and agility obstacles including tunnels in the active area, water stations, poo-bag dispensers, benches, and on-site toilets. Shade structures cover the active area, though the passive side has less cover, worth noting on a hot day. The bridge overhead gives some shelter from rain, which is a genuine plus in a Geelong winter.

The terrain. Being river-side, the ground can turn muddy after rain, so keep a towel in the car. The mix of sand, mulch and open ground gives dogs varied footing to work with.

Getting there. Free off-street parking is available on-site at Belmont Park. Bus routes run along High Street, but that leaves a moderate walk over to Barrabool Road, so the park is easiest to reach by car.

Make a day of it. The park links to the Barwon River Trail, a long riverside path good for an on-leash walk before or after a run. The High Street cafes are about five minutes away by car, with several dog-friendly footpath and courtyard spots including WoodHouse Cafe, Lavish Specialty Coffee and Bilby. When to go. Sunday mornings are the busiest stretch, so an evening or an off-peak weekday is quieter if your dog prefers space.
