Sweet Adeline on The Grange

Sweet Adeline on The Grange sets up in the gardens of Barwon Grange, a National Trust property from 1855 by the Barwon River in Newtown, at 25 Fernleigh Street. It is a weekend garden cafe, and the roomy outdoor setting is what makes it work with a dog in tow.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome across the outdoor garden, with seating near the sandpit, by the van and in the art alley. Keep dogs on a lead at all times, both out of courtesy to the heritage grounds and because it is a shared family space. Water bowls turn up, but the setting is rustic, so pack a portable bowl.

Good to know. Expect La Madre bakery sourdough and pastries, organic coffee and specialty teas, in a genuinely pretty riverside garden. It trades weekends, roughly Saturday 8am to 2pm and Sunday 8am to 4pm, so confirm hours before you drive out.

Getting there. Street parking is on Fernleigh Street and the surrounding residential streets. The cafe sits inside the Barwon Grange grounds, a short walk from the car.

Nearby with the dogs. The Barwon River paths run right past, so a riverside walk before or after is the natural pairing. Check council signage for where off-lead applies.

Get there early on a fine weekend. The garden is the whole appeal, and it is the first thing to fill.
