Barwon River

The Barwon River trail is a flat, paved, multi-use path running through central Geelong, with popular stretches around Balyang Sanctuary, Newtown and Queens Park. It is an easy all-fitness walk, and the headline for dog owners is a real off-leash section upstream rather than just another on-leash loop.

The rules. On the main paved paths and in established picnic areas like Balyang Sanctuary, dogs must be on-leash. Off-leash under effective control is allowed along the northern bank upstream from the Queens Park Bridge to Fyansford Common, which is the stretch to aim for if you want your dog off the lead. Rules can shift seasonally around bird-nesting areas, so read the signage on the day and check the City of Greater Geelong dog controls if unsure.

The walk. Flat and paved, with river views and connections into adjoining parklands. It is shared with cyclists and joggers, so keep leashed dogs in close on the narrower sections.

Watch-outs. The area is habitat for the endangered Growling Grass Frog, so keep dogs on the paths and out of the wetlands and sensitive bank vegetation.

What's there. Dog-waste bags and bins along the main track, toilets and picnic spots at Balyang Sanctuary, and water fountains with dog bowls at several of the busier points.

Getting there. Parking is available at Balyang Sanctuary off Shelford Road and along Queens Park Road in Newtown. The Route 36 bus stops near the corner of Gairloch Grove and West Fyans Street, and Geelong Station is roughly 4km away. Dog-friendly cafes on Pakington Street in Geelong West are a short walk or drive.

Quietest mid-week mornings and late afternoons. On weekends the narrow stretch between Balyang and Princes Bridge gets packed with cyclists and dogs between roughly 10am and 2pm, so a reactive dog is better off on the wider Fyansford Common end.
