Valley Road Nursery

Valley Road Nursery is a boutique plant nursery at 9 North Valley Road, Highton, on a leafy residential street in the Geelong hills. It is one of the rare local nurseries where a leashed dog comes browsing with you instead of waiting in the car: dogs are welcome to accompany you through the outdoor, undercover and display areas, and staff are friendly toward well-behaved pets. You may even meet Coco, the resident nursery cat, so a dog that has learned some manners around cats will get more out of the visit. Note the venue itself has no on-site cafe despite how the directory listing reads; this is a plants-and-pots stop, not a lunch one.

The dog setup

Keep your dog on a short leash and clear of the garden beds and potted stock, which is the only real etiquette required. There is no water set out for dogs, so bring your own bowl. The layout is compact and mostly undercover, which makes it an easy browse in Geelong's less reliable weather, and staff are known for unhurried advice, so there is time to linger.

What you will find

The range runs wider than the small footprint suggests: indoor plants, pots and planters, succulents, grasses, shrubs, advanced trees and edibles, plus giftware and home decor with gift wrapping on offer. Locals rate the helpful staff and the quality of the stock. Hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday.

Getting there and parking

It is on North Valley Road, Highton VIC 3216, with on-street parking. That is a residential street, so parking tightens on weekends and through spring when both the nursery and the neighbourhood are busiest. Weekday mornings are the quiet window and the easiest with a dog.

Close by with the dogs

The Waurn Ponds Creek Trail is close by for a post-browse walk, though creek corridors and shared paths in Greater Geelong are on-leash unless signed otherwise. Belmont Dog Park is the off-lead option a short drive down the hill, and the Barwon River trail network gives a longer riverside walk. For coffee, 63 Degrees Highton is in the suburb and Afterglow Espresso sits on the Waurn Ponds side.
