Kananook Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Kananook Reserve is a multi-use neighbourhood park on Kirkwood Avenue in Seaford, officially designated a dog off-leash free roam area by Frankston City Council. The grassed sports oval is the centrepiece, giving dogs a big open run in a quiet, community-focused setting.

The rules

The off-leash designation covers the reserve, but it is a shared space rather than a dedicated fenced dog park, so supervision is required at all times and dogs must come back when called. Keep your dog on-leash within 10 metres of the barbecues and picnic areas, and on-leash whenever organised sport or training is on the oval.

Declared dangerous or menacing dogs and greyhounds must stay leashed at all times, and you need to carry bags and clean up, with bins provided. Note that the nearby Kananook Creek Reserve is separate: dogs stay on-leash on the constructed paths there.

What's there

A water tap with a bowl sits on site, alongside a barbecue and picnic table, public toilets near the playground and dog waste bins. The playground itself is fenced, which keeps the kids' side and the dog side separate.

Getting there

The reserve sits at Kirkwood Avenue, Seaford, a short trip from Seaford Railway Station on the Frankston line. Free parking is available around the reserve, particularly on the south side near the basketball stadium.

Close by with the dogs

The Bruce Aitken Reserve dog off leash area is the other grassed Seaford option, and the Maple Reserve dog off leash area covers the northern end of the suburb. On warm days the Keast Park off leash dog beach is the obvious upgrade.

Pepsi: this one is about the open oval and the quiet. No crowds, water on tap and space to actually run.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest. Expect more people on weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons, and check whether sport is scheduled if your dog needs uninterrupted space.
