George Street Reserve is a wooded bushland reserve in Sandringham, set between George Street, Tulip Street and Bay Road. It offers something different from the open ovals nearby: sandy tracks winding through trees, a more natural, sniffy walk than a flat-out run.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash in the designated wooded areas but must stay under effective voice control. A large part of the reserve is fenced off for native vegetation regeneration, and dogs are strictly prohibited from entering those zones. Dogs must be on-leash in the car park areas and within 20 metres of any playground, barbecue or organised sport. You must pick up after your dog, and note that bags are not provided on-site, so bring your own.

The terrain. Sandy, winding tracks through bushland, with limited seating and no water taps, public toilets or bin dispensers. Carry water for your dog, especially in warm weather.

Getting there. Access via George Street or Tulip Street, with free street parking on both. Sandringham Station is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk, or take the bus along Bay Road.

When to go. Weekend mornings and weekday early starts and after-work hours are busiest. The narrow trails mean close encounters, so reactive dogs are better suited to a quieter weekday window between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

The trails here are narrow and the regeneration fencing is there for a reason. Keep your dog on the tracks and out of the fenced bush, and steer clear of blind corners if it does not love a surprise meeting.
