George Street Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

George Street Reserve is a wooded bushland reserve in Sandringham, set between George Street, Tulip Street and Bay Road, and it offers something different from the open ovals nearby: sandy tracks winding through indigenous trees and coastal heathland, a sniffy natural walk rather than a flat-out run.

The dog setup

The reserve's outer perimeter is fenced, with entries at the northeast corner on George Street and the southwest corner on Tulip Street, but the internal off-lead areas are open. Dogs may be exercised off-lead at all times in the general parts of the reserve under effective control, and Bayside City Council requires them back on-lead in the car park areas and within 20 metres of any playground, barbecue or organised sport. The critical rule: large sections are fenced off for native vegetation regeneration, and dogs are banned from those zones at all times. Stay on the designated sandy tracks so the recovering understory is not trampled.

Max: the trails here are narrow and the regeneration fencing is doing a job. Keep your dog on the tracks and out of the fenced bush, and steer wide of blind corners if surprise meetings do not go down well.

What is on site

Almost nothing, by design: sandy tracks, heavily wooded vegetation and limited seating. There are no water taps, no bins and no public toilets inside the reserve, so carry water for your dog in warm weather and pack out your bags. The woodland itself, protected since fire damage in 2006, is the reward, with indigenous species making a strong comeback inside the exclosures.

Getting there and parking

Access from George Street or Tulip Street with free street parking on both. Sandringham Station is a 15 to 20 minute walk, or take a bus along Bay Road.

When to go

Weekend mornings and the weekday before-work and after-work hours are busiest, and the narrow trails mean close encounters are the norm. Reactive dogs do better in a quieter weekday window between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

The Bay Road Cafe at 114 Bay Road has a leafy garden courtyard that regulars bring their dogs to, minutes from the reserve.
