Walter Galt Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Walter Galt Reserve is a large off-leash reserve in Parkdale, run by the City of Kingston, and it is one of the busier local spots for a proper run. The off-leash area sits in the southern section of the reserve, off Nepean Highway, and the draw is open space rather than full fencing, so it suits dogs with reliable recall.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash in the designated southern section only and must stay under effective voice control. Everywhere else in the reserve, including near the playground, the sports grounds and surrounding footpaths, dogs must be on-leash. Keep dogs at least 10 metres clear of the playground, and pick up after them using the bins provided.

What's there. There are three water fountains with dog bowls, on-site parking, picnic tables and benches, and mature trees for shade. Sealed paths run through the reserve, and there is night lighting, which helps for winter evening walks. Note there are no public toilets on site.

Getting there. By car, access is off Nepean Highway and via Parkdale and Warren Roads, with parking on site. Local bus routes run nearby, and bike trails cut through the reserve for anyone walking or riding in.

Watch-outs. The reserve is not fully enclosed, so a dog that bolts can reach the road or the sports grounds. Check whether a local team is using the grounds before you let your dog off, since the usable off-leash space shrinks on game days and you will want dogs leashed near any active match.

When to go. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday gives you the most open space. Weekends get busy, especially outside football season. The park is large enough that a timid dog can find room away from the pack. Good for big runners who come back when called.
