Walter Galt Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Walter Galt Reserve is a large City of Kingston reserve at 115 Warren Road in Parkdale, with its designated off-leash area in the southern section off the Nepean Highway. This is an open-space run, not a fenced enclosure: big ovals, mature trees, sealed paths and enough room for a genuine gallop, which is why it draws dogs and owners from across the bayside suburbs.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only in the designated southern section, and dogs must stay under effective voice and hand control with a lead carried at all times. Everywhere else, footpaths, the playground zone and the sports ovals, is on-lead, with dogs kept at least 10 metres clear of playground equipment and leashed near any active match. Waste bags and the bins are your responsibility. Because the ground is unfenced, honest recall is the entry price: a dog that bolts can reach the road or the sports grounds.

Worth knowing

Three water fountains with dog bowls, on-site parking, picnic tables, benches and night lighting cover the practical side; there are no public toilets on site. Check whether a local team is using the grounds before letting your dog off, since game days shrink the usable off-leash space. Mid-morning or early afternoon on weekdays gives the most room, weekends get busy, and the reserve is large enough for a timid dog to find space away from the pack. It suits big runners who come back when called.

Getting there and parking

By car, come off the Nepean Highway via Parkdale or Warren Roads, with parking on site. Bus routes run nearby, and bike trails cut through the reserve for anyone riding in. The beach end of Parkdale is a few minutes down the road if you want to finish with a bay stroll.

The Bayside Soho Coffee House is the local coffee stop, and The Mordi Canteen sits on Beach Road at Mordialloc for the post-walk feed. If your dog prefers a fence line, Reg Marlow Reserve at Mentone is the closest fenced option, and the Mentone Beach dog off-leash area makes a good coastal alternative.
