The Mordi Canteen sits at 226 Beach Road, directly across from the foreshore, which makes it the natural coffee stop on a beach or Bay Trail outing. It is relaxed, busy, and set up for dogs on the front deck.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating, mainly the spacious front deck, so you can keep your dog by the table while you eat. Indoor seating is for people only. Staff are known to put out water bowls and have been known to hand out a treat.

Good to know. Hearty cafe breakfasts are the draw, big serves of baked eggs, hash browns and smashed avo, with well-regarded coffee. The deck fills with cyclists, families and dog walkers, so expect a bustle rather than a quiet corner.

Getting there. Street parking runs along Beach Road but it gets competitive on sunny weekends. Mordialloc station on the Frankston line is a 10 to 15 minute walk, and the cafe is right on the Bay Trail for anyone arriving on foot or by bike.

Nearby with the dogs. The Mordialloc Beach foreshore and the Mordialloc Creek trail are both at the door for an on-leash walk. One thing to get right: dogs are banned at all times in the no-dog zone between Mordialloc Creek and Bay Street, and the rest of the beach swings between on-leash, off-leash and prohibited depending on the time and season. Read the signage before you unclip.

Grab a takeaway and head for the foreshore lawns, just check which stretch of sand is dog-friendly that hour first.
