Mentone Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Mentone Beach's dog off-leash area is the western stretch of sand on Port Phillip Bay where the City of Kingston allows dogs off-lead around the clock, between Charman Road and Plummer Road. This is one of Melbourne's busiest and most social dog beaches: expect company rather than solitude, a wide mix of breeds and sizes, and water that stays shallow for a long way out, which suits waders and cautious swimmers.

Leash status

The Charman Road to Plummer Road section is a 24-hour off-leash zone, but only on the sand itself, not on the Bay Trail path above it. The rest of the Mentone foreshore follows Kingston's seasonal beach rules: from 1 November to 31 March dogs may be off-leash on the sand between sunrise and 10am, are banned entirely from 10am to 7:30pm, and must be on-lead after 7:30pm. From 1 April to 31 October it flips to off-leash at all times except an 11am to 3pm on-lead window. Lead up in the car parks and on the path down to the water, whatever the season.

Water and terrain

This is a calm, curving stretch of the bay with small waves and a gradual drop-off, so most dogs can wade out comfortably. Low tide leaves a broad flat run for fetch and ball games; high tide pushes everyone closer to the seawall. Seaweed washes up in drifts along this part of the bay and the sand carries more debris than the quieter beaches either side, so keep an eye on a dog that hoovers kelp.

Max: the off-leash section is the sand only, so clip the lead back on before you hit the Bay Trail. Plenty of people get caught out walking up off the beach with a free dog.

Getting there and parking

The foreshore sits at the end of Nepean Highway exits through Mentone's centre, with car parks behind the surf club and along Beach Road, plus picnic tables, toilets and showers in the precinct. The Bay Trail runs the length of the beach for an on-lead warm-up walk, and buses along Nepean Highway stop within a few minutes' walk.

Worth knowing

The surf club end has the best facilities but sits outside the off-leash section, so it works better as a before or after stop. The beach is patrolled seasonally, and the swimming zone between the flags is for people. Bring your own dog water bowl; taps near the club serve humans first. Weekend middays are the packed hours, and this is a dog-owner crowd that knows the rules, which keeps the vibe easygoing.

When to go

Early mornings and the last hour of daylight are when locals bring their dogs, and the sand is at its emptiest on weekday mornings. Summer weekends between 10am and 7:30pm are a no-go for dogs anywhere on the foreshore, so plan around the seasonal window rather than turning up and hoping.

Applehead Deli on the Mentone strip pours coffee for the post-beach crowd, and Reg Marlow Reserve Fenced Dog Park up the road is the enclosed fallback when you want a contained run instead of open sand.
