What visitors mention
George Woods Reserve runs along Mordialloc Creek off Governor Road, a large open grassed off-leash area that doubles as a launch point for the creek trail. The defining catch is that it is unfenced and sits right beside a busy road, so this is a reserve for dogs with reliable recall, not a place to test a new rescue.
The rules. Dogs can be off-leash on the open grass but must stay under effective voice control at all times. There is no fence, particularly toward Governor Road and the creek, so honest recall is the price of entry. On the paved trails through the reserve and around the playground, dogs go back on-leash. Bags and bins are provided and cleaning up is mandatory.
What's there. A dog drinking station, public toilets, bench seating and a covered picnic area with barbecues, plus a large nautical-themed playground for families. There is ample parking including a boat-ramp car park.
Watch-outs. Two real ones: Governor Road traffic on the unfenced edge, and the open creek. If your dog launches into water on sight, keep them leashed near the bank.
Getting there. Access is off Governor Road, set GPS to George Woods Reserve. Mordialloc station on the Frankston line is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk, about 1.2km, and the reserve links straight into the Mordialloc Creek trail for walkers and cyclists.
When to go. Mornings and late afternoons are busiest, more so on weekends. For a calmer, safer run, especially with a less confident dog, mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the pick, when road noise and crowds both ease off.
