Dirlton Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Dirlton Reserve is a small, unfenced bushland off-leash area at 32 Dirlton Crescent in Park Orchards, in Melbourne's north east. It is pines and native scrub rather than an open oval, a nature-focused sniffing ground for dogs with solid recall, and a short circuit rather than a big run.

The dog setup

The reserve is off-leash but unfenced, backing straight onto surrounding bushland, so effective voice control is essential and you should carry a leash the whole visit. Be mindful of wildlife and nesting habitat in the denser sections; Manningham recognises the site as a high-priority bushland reserve, with pines on the western side and native tea-tree and wattles to the east. Dogs must not harass or rush other people or dogs. There are no bins, so pick up and carry waste out with you.

Worth knowing

There is no formal path network, just informal tracks through the trees, and the loop takes under ten minutes, so this is a walk-and-sniff stop rather than a stretching run. No water taps and limited seating, so bring your own water and bags. It stays quiet most days with a few local regulars in the mornings. Visit in daylight: the tree cover makes it darker than it looks from the street. Nearby Iona Reserve allows the walk to be extended into adjacent green buffer zones.

Max: unfenced bush means recall matters more than usual here. If your dog chases scent trails, keep a long line handy rather than going fully off-leash.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking is easy to find right at the entrance on Dirlton Crescent, reached via Springvale Road or Park Road. Public transport does not really reach this one, so it is a car trip from anywhere else.
