The Paddocks Wetlands

The Paddocks Wetlands is a large open reserve on Bridge Road in Para Hills West, South Australia, combining bridged walking trails, a central lake, and bird conservation areas with a fully fenced dog exercise yard. The defining reason to go is the balance: a structured on-leash wetland trail paired with a secure off-leash enclosure.

The rules. The reserve enforces strict, location-specific leash requirements. Dogs must remain on a leash, maximum 2 metres, at all times within the wetlands area, along the walking trails, and across the general sporting fields. Off-leash play is permitted only inside the fenced dog exercise yard, provided your dog remains under effective control. A small dog park trial is currently running with specific hours: 2 PM to 6 PM daily is restricted to individual use, while shared use applies at all other times. The trial runs until June 2027. Dogs are strictly prohibited inside the fenced children's playground, and owners must clean up using the provided waste bags and bins.

What's there. The fenced dog park features separate areas designed for different dog sizes and temperaments. The broader reserve offers paved and gravelled walking trails circling the wetlands, shady picnic settings, benches, an outdoor gym, public toilets, and a dedicated carpark.

Getting there. Driving is straightforward, located directly on Bridge Road in Para Hills West with ample parking available. Adelaide Metro buses stop along Bridge Road, making the reserve easily reachable from Para Hills West, Salisbury South, and surrounding suburbs without a car.

Watch-outs. This is an active bird conservation site. Keep dogs well away from the native wildlife on and around the pond. Additionally, the wetland trails can become muddy after rain, so adjust your walking route accordingly.

Nearby with the dogs. For a change of scenery, Large Dog Park Maxwell Road is a short drive away. If you are heading back towards Mawson Lakes, Relish on Main and the Morning light cafe offer good post-walk refreshment options.

When to go. Walk the wetlands trails on-leash in the early morning for quieter paths and better birdwatching. Use the fenced dog park later in the day, but expect the yard to be busiest during weekend mornings, sunny afternoons, and early evenings. Weekday mornings remain the best slot for nervous or reactive dogs.
