Toohey Ridge Track

Toohey Ridge Track runs 4.8 km along a forested ridge in Toohey Forest Park, Salisbury, on the traditional lands of the Yuggera and Turrbal peoples, and it stays leashed the whole way because this is active koala habitat. The moderate grade takes most dogs and owners 1 to 1.5 hours, with a mix of sealed bitumen and dirt underfoot.

The walk starts at the Toohey Picnic Area and follows the ridge line towards the South East Freeway. Grass trees and sandstone boulders line the route, and short detours lead out to Sandstone Lookout and Western Outlook if you want a break with a view. The surface changes from smooth bitumen near the start to natural dirt track further along, so expect a bit more work underfoot as you go.

The rules are strict and enforced: dogs must stay on-leash at all times, managed by Brisbane City Council. Beyond koalas, the forest is home to wallabies, squirrel gliders and lace monitors, all reasons the leash rule gets checked regularly rather than treated as a suggestion.

Water is available back at the picnic area, which has sheltered tables, BBQs, toilets and a potable water supply. There is nothing along the ridge trail itself, so carry enough water for your dog before you set off, especially if you are doing the full loop with the lookout detours.

Hazards worth knowing about: the unsealed stretches turn slippery, muddy and rutted after rain, and ticks and snakes are more active through spring and summer. The track is sometimes closed for prescribed burns, so it is worth checking before you drive out.

Getting there is easiest by car, with a free car park at 600 Toohey Road, Nathan, though it fills on weekends. Translink buses 113 and 135 run along Toohey Road near Griffith University, but note that dogs are not allowed on Brisbane City Council buses unless secured in an enclosed carrier.

Nearby with the dogs, the ridge track sits within the wider Toohey Forest network if you want to extend the walk. For off-lead time before or after, both the Salisbury Recreation Reserve Fenced Dog Park and the Tarragindi Small Dog Park are within easy reach.

When to go. Go on a cool, dry morning outside the warmer months if you can, both for tick activity and for muddy footing. Good for owners who do not mind a leash the whole way and want a proper bushland ridge walk without leaving the city.
