Toohey Forest

Toohey Forest is a large slab of native bushland on Brisbane's southside, spanning Tarragindi, Nathan and Mount Gravatt, with eucalypt forest, steep ridges and an extensive network of dirt walking trails. Dogs are welcome but must stay on lead the whole way through, which makes this a solid pick for a proper bush walk rather than an off-leash run.

The rules. Leash on at all times, on every trail, no exceptions. Pick up after your dog and use the bins at the main entry points. Keep dogs on the formed paths rather than pushing into the bush, the forest supports koalas and other wildlife that shouldn't be disturbed. If you want off-leash time, Salisbury Recreation Reserve dog park (corner of Evans Road and Wincott Street) is the nearest fenced alternative.

The walk. Trails range from short loops near the picnic areas to longer routes like the Toohey Ridge Track, mostly dirt surface with some genuine climbing on the ridge sections. Signage at trailheads gives distances and difficulty, so it's easy to pick something that matches your dog's fitness.

What's there. Picnic tables and some BBQs near the main picnic area, and free parking at several entry points including Toohey Rd, the Griffith Nathan campus, and Mt Gravatt Outlook. There's no water on the trails themselves, so bring a bowl and carry enough for a hot day.

Getting there. Easiest by car off the Pacific Motorway (M1), taking the Tarragindi or Nathan/Kessels Rd exits. Brisbane Transport buses run along Toohey Rd and near Griffith University if you're coming without a car. Parking at Mt Gravatt Outlook fills fast on weekends, the smaller entries off Messines Ridge Rd in Tarragindi are a quieter way in.

Nearby with the dogs. Todd & Pup in Moorooka has an astro-turfed deck with shade and water stations, a good option to refuel after a forest walk. Little Black Pug Cafe in Mount Gravatt runs a dedicated dog menu, and Snag & Brown in Annerley has its own off-leash dog garden.

When to go. Early mornings and weekends bring the most hikers and dog walkers, especially in good weather. Mid-week mornings or early afternoons are quieter and kinder to a nervous dog. Good for confident on-lead walkers who want real distance and some hills, less suited to dogs that need to run free.
