Kalora Park Oval Fenced Dog Park sits at 11 McKenzie Lane in Narre Warren North, a fully fenced off-leash space split into two separate enclosures so bigger and smaller dogs don't have to share. It's inside a larger recreation reserve with an oval, walking paths and a memorial garden, so there's plenty to do beyond the fence too.

The rules. A few things to check before you go in:

  • Watch for a flag at the gate. If one's flying, an obedience, agility or flyball class is in session and the space is off limits
  • The Berwick Obedience Dog Club uses part of the facility for training at set times (historically around midday to late afternoon), so read the signs on arrival
  • A rough cap of eight dogs at a time is suggested. If it's busy, check in with other owners before letting your dog in
  • Pull an aggressive dog out straight away, and if others are waiting for a turn, keep your visit short
  • Clean up after your dog and use the bins provided

What's there. Double-gate entry so nothing bolts while you're getting the lead off, water dispensers, poop bag dispensers and seating for owners. It backs onto a playground, oval and netball courts, and there's wheelchair-accessible parking and entrances.

the two-enclosure split is worth using properly. If your dog is nervy around big, boisterous dogs, take the smaller yard rather than hoping the mix sorts itself out.

Getting there. Off the Monash Freeway (M1) via the Narre Warren North Road exit, then onto McKenzie Lane. Bus routes 894 and 895 run along Narre Warren North Road, with a short walk in from the stop.

Nearby with the dogs. Berwick's Main Street cafe strip is a short drive away with several outdoor-seating options.

Saturdays, especially afternoon into evening, are the busiest stretch. For the fenced yard to yourselves, aim for a weekday morning or a Sunday before midday.
