Petrie Park Dog Off Leash Area

Petrie Park is a large open green space beside Petrie Creek in central Nambour, and its dog off-leash area gives local dogs a straightforward run close to town. It is not a fenced dog park, so the rules lean on control rather than barriers.

The dog setup

The designated open grass beside the creek is where dogs can be off-leash under Sunshine Coast Council local laws, kept under effective voice control at all times. On-lead applies everywhere else in Petrie Park, including the footbridges, and council rules keep dogs off structured playing surfaces and out of playgrounds entirely.

If a game or training session is on, treat the field as off-limits and keep the lead on. Regulated or restricted dogs are not permitted, and droppings need to go straight in the bins provided.

Worth knowing

The creek hosts water dragons, turtles and the occasional snake, especially in warmer months. Keep dogs off the creek banks, both for the wildlife's sake and theirs, and give any snake a very wide berth.

Shaded seating and benches line the area, waste bins are on-site, and the pedestrian and bike paths make it easy to extend a visit into a loop.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Price Street, Petrie Park Road or Hospital Road, with street parking around the edges including spots near the sports clubhouse. It is a short walk from Nambour's town centre and the train station, so walking in is realistic.

Make a day of it

The Gary Evans Walkway follows Petrie Creek from the park, a shaded 1.3 kilometre on-lead stretch that pairs well with an off-leash run. The Nambour Dog Agility Park is the town's equipment option if your dog wants structure as well as space.

When to go

Early mornings and late afternoons are busiest and weekend afternoons draw the most dogs. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the quiet window, after checking the field is free of sport.
