The off-leash area at Petrie Park runs along the playing field beside Petrie Creek, a large open green space in central Nambour. It is a straightforward local spot for a run, with creek-side shade and easy access from town.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash on the designated playing field, and on-leash everywhere else in Petrie Park, including the footbridges. The field is off-leash only when it is not in use for sport, so if a game or training is on, it reverts to on-leash. Keep your dog under effective voice control at all times, pick up after them, and note that regulated or restricted dogs are not permitted.

What's there. Shaded seating and benches, waste bins on-site, and adjacent pedestrian and bike paths for a longer loop. The Gary Evans Walkway follows the creek from here if you want to extend the outing.

Getting there. Access is via Price Street, Petrie Park Road or Hospital Road, with parking on the surrounding streets. It is a short distance from Nambour town centre and the train station, so walking or riding in is realistic.

Watch-outs. The creek hosts water dragons, turtles and the occasional snake, especially in warmer months. Keep dogs off the creek banks to avoid wildlife and steer clear if a snake is about.

When to go. Early mornings and late afternoons are busiest, and weekend afternoons draw the most dogs. For a quieter run, aim for mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday, and always check the field is free of sport first.
