Whitehaven Crescent Reserve on Whitehaven Crescent, Mulgrave, is a large open City of Monash reserve with room for active dogs to stretch out, alongside a playground that had a 2021 upgrade for the family crowd.

The rules. Dogs can be off-leash in the designated area, generally around the clock, as long as they stay under effective voice or hand control and in sight. Keep your dog on-lead within 20 metres of the playground, barbecue areas or any organised sport, and off the playground itself. Carry a lead and waste bags at all times. The reserve is unfenced, so a dependable recall matters; the upside is there is plenty of space to spread out.

What's there. This is one of the better-equipped local reserves: a drinking fountain, waste bins, bench seating and a big open running area, with the playground set apart from the dog space.

Getting there. Street parking runs along Whitehaven Crescent. For public transport, the 814 bus (Springvale to Dandenong) passes nearby on Jacksons Road, with a short walk in through the surrounding streets.

Loads of open grass to open up on, just clock where the playground is and give it a wide berth so you stay on-lead only where you have to.

Early mornings before 8am or mid-week afternoons are the calmest; weekday late afternoons and weekend late mornings are the busy stretches, though there is usually room to keep your distance.
