Freeway Reserve, off Wellington Road in Mulgrave, is a large multi-use City of Monash reserve near Jells Park: a mix of flat and gently rolling grass with perimeter trees, and a popular morning and evening exercise spot for locals.

The rules. Dogs can be off-leash 24/7 in the designated areas under effective voice or hand control. Two buffers matter here because it is a shared sporting reserve: on-lead within 30 metres of any organised sport, training or the archery range in use, and on-lead within 20 metres of play equipment, barbecues or picnic areas in use. Dogs are kept off the turf wickets and playground perimeters, and paved paths through the reserve are generally on-lead. Carry a lead at all times. The reserve is unfenced.

What's there. Waste-bag dispensers and bins are provided, with limited bench seating around the perimeter and water stations near the paths and car park (check the taps are running). There is free parking off Wellington Road near the sports fields.

Getting there. The reserve sits on the north side of Wellington Road, east of Blackburn Road, with entry off Wellington Road and easy access from both EastLink and the Monash Freeway. The 693 and 754 buses stop nearby on Blackburn Road or Wellington Road.

It doubles as sports ground, so scan for a game or training before you unclip and keep well clear of the archery range when it is in use.

Weekday late mornings to mid-afternoon (roughly 10am to 3pm) are quietest; weekday evenings and weekend mornings are the busiest. If your dog is timid, head for the northern end away from the parking and pitches.
