Gladeswood Reserve, off Maygrove Way and Gladeswood Drive in Mulgrave, is an open suburban City of Monash reserve with large grassy areas, mature trees and a playground: good space for running, fetch and active socialising.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash under effective voice or hand control, but must be on-lead within 20 metres of the play equipment when in use, and on-lead on the surrounding footpaths and in car parks. Dogs stay off the playground and clear of any organised sport. Carry a lead and keep your dog in sight. The reserve is largely unfenced and backs onto homes, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than those inclined to chase or wander.

What's there. A reasonably equipped reserve: a drinking fountain, a waste-bag dispenser and bins, park seating, some sheltered areas and on-site toilets. Parking is on-street or in a small lot off Maygrove Way.

Watch-outs. The trees and shrubs attract birdlife, so keep a high-prey-drive dog under close control near the edges.

Getting there. Access is via Gladeswood Drive or Maygrove Way, about five minutes from the Monash Freeway, with free residential parking around the reserve. Buses run nearby on Wanda Street or Brandon Road, a walk from the park.

Open ground with houses on the boundary and birds in the trees, so I keep recall sharp and stay off the footpaths on-lead.

Weekday mornings, late afternoons and weekend mornings are the busy windows; the central field is big enough to give a crowded entrance a wide berth.
