Barry J Powell Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Barry J Powell Reserve is a ten-hectare community park on Halton Road in Noble Park North, and its dog off-leash area occupies the grassy north-west corner of a reserve that otherwise belongs to football, cricket and playgrounds. The off-leash zone runs around the clock, seven days a week, which makes it a useful no-clock option in Melbourne's south-east.

The dog setup

The off-leash patch is designated but unfenced, which is the one fact that decides whether this park suits your dog. Council rules require effective voice or hand-signal control, you staying within 50 metres of your dog, and the reserve backs onto roads and a car park, so a bolter needs to stay on lead. Keep 20 metres clear of the playgrounds, leash up when organised sport is running on either oval, and carry bags, since rangers here do patrol and on-the-spot fines are real. Registration tags are compulsory across Greater Dandenong.

The vibe

A big, busy community reserve rather than a dedicated dog park. There is a shelter with seating in the off-leash corner, paved paths looping the grounds, BBQs, picnic areas, tennis courts and the Jan Wilson Community Centre, so expect sport crowds and families sharing the space. The dog zone is a defined patch, but the surrounding activity is constant.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 57 Halton Road, with free parking along the southern side including accessible spaces. Buses reach the surrounding streets but involve a walk in, and there is no train station within easy range, so it is a drive-to park.

Close by with the dogs

For a fully fenced alternative, the Lightwood Road fenced dog park in Noble Park is the obvious pick, and Birkley Reserve is another unfenced option nearby. When to go
