Barry J Powell Reserve's off-leash area sits in the north-west corner of a big ten-hectare reserve on Halton Road, Noble Park North. It is open slather, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, which makes it a solid default for anyone who wants a run without watching the clock.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice or hand-signal control at all times and kept within 50 metres of you. Stay at least 20 metres clear of the playgrounds, and if a sports match is on at either oval, dogs go back on-leash even in the general reserve grounds. Registration tags are compulsory, as they are anywhere in Greater Dandenong.

What's there. There is a shelter in the off-leash corner for shade and a place to sit, plus free on-site parking along the southern side of Halton Road. The rest of the reserve carries two ovals, two playgrounds, a cricket net and the Jan Wilson Community Centre, so expect some foot traffic from sport and community groups even though the dog area itself is a defined patch.

Watch-outs. The park is unfenced. That is fine for a dog with reliable recall, but it backs onto roads and the car park, so a dog that bolts needs to stay on lead here rather than testing the open ground.

Getting there. Drive to 57 Halton Road, Noble Park North, and park along the southern side. Local bus routes reach the surrounding streets but leave a walk in from the nearest stop. There is no train station within easy walking distance.

Nearby with the dogs. The immediate surrounds are residential. For a coffee or a bite afterwards, dog-friendly cafes turn up in Noble Park proper and along Springvale Road toward Mulgrave. Confirm pet policy at booking if you are chasing accommodation, as Princes Highway motels vary on pet fees and room types.

Weekday evenings from 5 to 7pm and weekend mornings from 8 to 11am draw the biggest crowds. For a quieter run, aim for a weekday mid-morning or early afternoon. Good for high-energy dogs that want the room to properly stretch out, less ideal for a nervy escape artist given the lack of fencing.
