Marcoola Fenced Dog Park

Marcoola Fenced Dog Park sits on the corner of David Low Way and the Marcoola Esplanade, a fully fenced off-leash enclosure open around the clock. Its signature is overhead: the park sits under the approach path to the Sunshine Coast Airport, so jets glide over while the dogs run below, and the regulars treat plane watching as part of the visit.

The dog setup

Inside the fence, dogs are off-leash under effective voice control, with leads staying on through the entry and exit. There is open grass to run plus a small set of agility equipment that gives energetic dogs something to work. Shaded seating and tables cover the owners, water stations and a tap handle sandy or muddy paws, and bins sit on site with public toilets nearby. Council registration tags must be worn, regulated or dangerous dogs are barred, and dogs stay leashed outside the enclosure, including on the neighbouring sports fields and near the playground.

Pepsi: the first jet goes over loud and low and every dog in the park looks up. Mine got used to it in one visit; anxious dogs might take two.

The vibe

Rarely crowded and genuinely local. Early mornings and the late afternoon around 4 to 5pm are the social peak, and Sunday mornings fill up, while weekday mid-mornings between 10am and 2pm leave plenty of room. The aircraft noise is constant but most dogs tune it out quickly; truly sound-sensitive dogs are the exception to test on a short first visit.

Getting there and parking

The park is straight off David Low Way at the Marcoola Esplanade corner. Free street parking runs along the Esplanade and surrounding streets with an accessible bay available, and TransLink buses stop close by along David Low Way. The beach side of the Esplanade is a short walk across for a post-run swim or a paw rinse in the surf.

Worth knowing

Shade over the main run is limited, so the middle of a hot day is the wrong time and you should bring water even though taps are provided. The coastal grass seeds up after summer, so check paws and ears after a good session.

Close by with the dogs

Bulli on Lorraine Avenue is the walk-up coffee stop for beachgoers with dogs, and Cuba St Coffee Roasters up the highway has easy outdoor tables. For a swim, the Mudjimba off-leash beach is a few minutes north.
