Waverley Park is a compact, landscaped Stonnington reserve on Sylvester Crescent in Malvern East, built around Waverley Oval. The whole reserve is designated off-leash, which makes it a handy local run, though it doubles as a football and cricket ground, so timing around sport matters.

The rules. The entire park is off-leash, but dogs must be under effective voice control, and you need to carry a lead and clip it on when entering or leaving. If your dog is on the oval during organised games or training, it must be on-lead. Keep dogs at least 10 metres from the playground equipment. Pick up after your dog; bins and bags are provided.

What is there. There is a playground, the Bert Healy Pavilion, and open picnic seating, plus the turf cricket wicket and football pitch. Bins and bags are on-site.

Getting there. Street parking along Sylvester Crescent is limited, so it is easiest on foot or by tram from the Waverley Road routes. It is a straightforward drive from Malvern East and Chadstone.

Nearby with the dogs. Mr Sister on Waverley Road has a heated dog-friendly courtyard, and Cannoli and Co. on Burke Road welcomes dogs at its street seating.

When to go. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon on weekdays is calmest. Evenings and weekend mornings draw local sport, training and families, so keep recall sharp around the playground when it is busy.
