Waverley Park Dog Off Leash Area

Waverley Park is a compact, landscaped City of Stonnington reserve on Sylvester Crescent in Malvern East, built around Waverley Oval and its turf cricket wicket. The whole reserve is designated off-leash, which makes it a genuinely useful local run in a built-up pocket of Melbourne's south-east, with one big caveat: it is also a working football and cricket ground, so the oval belongs to the dogs only when the sport is not on.

The dog setup

Off-lead status applies across the reserve, but City of Stonnington rules still require effective voice control and a leash carried at all times. Clip the lead on when entering and leaving, and keep your dog off the oval during organised games, club training and school sport. Dogs must stay clear of the playground area in the park's corner, and you pick up waste using the bins and bags provided. A water tap near the Bert Healy Pavilion saves you carrying a bottle.

Most of the park is fenced by hedges and residential boundaries, but entry points sit near busy Waverley Road, so if your dog bolts at traffic, keep a close hold at the gates. Facilities are otherwise simple: the playground, pavilion, open picnic seating and the oval itself.

Getting there and parking

Street parking along Sylvester Crescent is limited and fills quickly around sport, so arriving on foot or by tram along the Waverley Road routes is often easier. The park is a straightforward drive from Malvern East and Chadstone, and the Monash Freeway puts it within reach of the wider south-east.

When to go

Mid-morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays are the calm windows, with the oval usually clear and few other dogs around. Weekday evenings and weekend mornings bring football and cricket commitments, training sessions and families to the playground, so sharpen your recall and keep the playground margin wide when it is busy.
