Packer Park is a large, partly natural off-leash reserve on Leila Road in Carnegie, serving the Carnegie and Murrumbeena area with open lawns, mature trees and walking paths alongside a velodrome and playgrounds.

The rules. The designated off-leash area sits north of the sports ground and east of the creek. Within 20 metres of barbecues, playgrounds and picnic areas, dogs must be back on leash, and effective voice control is required whenever they are off it. Dogs are not permitted in the fenced playground, the sports fields, the bocce and bowls area, or the velodrome, so keep an eye on the boundary when you let them run.

What's there. Water bowls, natural walking trails, picnic spots and toilets, though reports on toilet cleanliness and bin placement are mixed, so do not rely on either being pristine.

Getting there. Access is via Leila Road and Hunter Street, with a car park near the corner of Leila Road and Dromana Avenue. Several bus routes run along nearby Koornang Road and Glen Eira Road.

Nearby with the dogs. Left Field Eatery and Spilt Milk are both a short drive or walk away on Koornang Road for a coffee afterwards.

The off-leash zone is unfenced, so solid recall matters here, especially on weekend mornings when the open lawns fill with other dogs.

Saturday and Sunday mornings between 9am and 11am, and weekday evenings after work, are the busiest times. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quieter, better if your dog is nervous around crowds.
