Spilt Milk

Spilt Milk is a tiny, tightly-run coffee and toastie spot at 288 Neerim Road, Carnegie, in a compact retro-styled fitout. It is a genuine local favourite among dog owners: the kind of place that keeps a stash of dog treats behind the counter and knows the regulars by name, human and otherwise.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the footpath seating out the front. Do not expect a courtyard: this is a handful of tables on Neerim Road with room to sit or tie up your dog beside you. Staff are known for offering water and the occasional treat without being asked, which makes it an easy habit-forming stop. Because the space is small and the footpath is close to passing foot traffic, a settled dog suits the room better than a restless one.

Worth knowing

The coffee runs on Padre beans and the toasties are the signature: the truffle mushroom version is the cult order, with a roast beef toastie and the classics alongside, plus pastries from Noisette and mini almond croissants in the cabinet. It opens from 6:30am on weekdays and 7am on weekends, closing at 2pm daily, so it is firmly a morning-and-lunch operation. Weekend mornings fill quickly at a cafe this size.

Getting there and parking

Neerim Road is a short walk from Carnegie railway station on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, which is the easy way in. Free street parking is available on Neerim Road and the surrounding side streets for anyone driving with the dog.

Make a day of it

The parks do the heavy lifting around here: the Lord Reserve dog off leash area is close by for a proper run, and the Packer Park off leash area gives another Glen Eira option with designated zones. Check the council signage on site for leash rules near playgrounds and ovals. For a second coffee in the suburb, Left Field Cafe is the other Carnegie name.
