Central Park Dog Off Leash Area

Central Park is a large City of Stonnington open space at the corner of Burke Road and Wattletree Road in Malvern East, built around a cricket oval with a gravel perimeter track and mature shade trees. The oval is the designated off-lead zone, and the park doubles as a busy local walking spot for the surrounding neighbourhood.

The dog setup

Off-lead running is allowed in the designated reserve area, with dogs under voice control and a maximum of four dogs per person. A drinking fountain with a dog bowl sits near the walking track, bins are provided around the oval, and the mature trees give real shade across the perimeter path. The unfenced oval is a generous space for a ball throw, and the gravel track makes an easy loop for owners who would rather walk the boundary.

Leash status

Arrive and leave on-lead, and keep the lead on in the surrounding streets. Dogs come off-lead only within the designated area, and even then the oval is shared ground: stay off it during cricket training, matches and events. The fenced children's playground is off-limits to dogs entirely, and the park's edges back onto busy roads, so unreliable recall is the main risk here.

Pepsi: the oval looks fully enclosed from the middle but it is wide open at the corners. If your dog chases a ball over the boundary, it lands near Burke Road traffic.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Central Park Road and Wattletree Road, but check the signed time limits. Route 5 trams stop at the Wattletree Road and Burke Road intersection right by the park, and Darling station is a 10 to 15 minute walk away.

Worth knowing

Weekdays during business hours and later evenings are the quiet windows. Sunday through the day, weeknights after 5pm and Saturday mornings are the busy stretches, when the cricket crowd and dog owners share the ground.

Close by with the dogs

Ardrie Park is the other off-lead favourite in Malvern East, shaded by big elms near the Howard Street end. If an unfenced oval is too loose for your dog, Pawfield Park in Caulfield East is fully fenced. For coffee after the walk, Mr Sister is a local cafe option nearby.
