Cheverton Valley Park Dog Off Leash Area

Cheverton Valley Park is an unfenced off-leash reserve on Cheverton Road in Lower Plenty, a quiet grassy valley reserve popular with locals rather than a fenced dog park. Dogs need to be under effective voice control since there's no boundary fence.

The rules. Banyule City Council requires dogs to be under effective control, meaning in sight and responding to voice commands, with a lead carried at all times. Dogs must be leashed within 5 metres of shared walking paths and 10 metres of playground equipment, and kept at least 5 metres clear of public barbecues. You're required to clean up after your dog, with waste going in the general bins on site.

What's there. The reserve is mostly open grass bordered by walking paths, with street parking along Cheverton Road. Bag dispensers are often on site but can run out, so bring your own. Water isn't guaranteed, so pack a bowl and bottle, especially over summer.

Getting there. Drive in via Main Road (Route 45) and turn onto Cheverton Road, where you'll find street parking in the surrounding residential streets. There's no direct train or tram service; the area is best reached by car, with local bus routes running along Main Road.

Nearby with the dogs. The Plenty River Trail is a short drive away and makes a good add-on walk. For a coffee stop, cafes along Main Road in Lower Plenty and Montmorency generally allow leashed dogs on footpath and outdoor seating, though it's worth checking each one on the day.

When to go. Weekend mornings between 9 and 11am are the busiest stretch with local dogs and families. Weekday mornings or afternoons are quieter and better suited to nervous dogs or off-leash training. It can get damp underfoot after rain given the valley setting, so factor that into your visit.
