Cheverton Valley Park Dog Off Leash Area

Cheverton Valley Park is an unfenced off-leash reserve on Cheverton Road in Lower Plenty, a quiet grassy valley reserve that locals use as their regular run. There is no boundary fence, so this one is for dogs that respond when called.

The rules

Banyule City Council requires dogs to be under effective control here, meaning in sight and responding to voice commands, with a lead carried at all times. Dogs must be leashed within 5 metres of shared walking paths and 10 metres of playground equipment, and kept clear of the public barbecues.

Clean up after your dog, with waste going in the general bins on site. The park opens onto quiet residential streets and backs onto neighbouring property fences rather than being double-gated, so treat any road edge as a hard limit.

Max: unfenced means recall is not a guess you get to test. Keep dogs close near the paths and barbecue area where families gather.

What is there

The reserve is mostly open grass bordered by walking paths, with a playground, basketball court and seating forming the central recreation zone. Bag dispensers are often stocked but run out, so bring your own, and pack a water bowl since nothing is guaranteed on site, especially over summer.

Getting there

Drive in via Main Road and turn onto Cheverton Road, with street parking along the reserve and surrounding residential streets. There is no direct train or tram; local buses run along Main Road, but the area is best reached by car.

When to go

Weekend mornings between 9 and 11am bring the local dogs and families out. Weekday mornings and afternoons stay quiet, which suits nervous dogs or off-leash training sessions, and the open ground can dry out hard in summer so aim for the cooler parts of the day.
