Banyule Flats Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Banyule Flats Reserve is a sprawling 46-hectare parkland on the Yarra River at Somerset Drive, Viewbank, mixing open grass fields with natural riparian woodland, and it's the pick for a dog with solid recall who wants real space rather than a fenced yard.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash in the designated areas but need to be under effective voice control, since this is open parkland, not a fenced park. Leads go back on in the car park, on shared pathways, and within 5 metres of the playground and BBQ facilities. Wetlands, reed beds, and fenced conservation zones are off-limits, watch for the signage. Waste bins are provided and pick-up is mandatory.

What's there. Parking is on gravel off Somerset Drive and there's plenty of it. Shade comes from mature trees rather than built shelters, and there's no mention of a dog-specific water station, so bring your own bowl and water, especially in summer. The reserve connects directly to the Main Yarra Trail for an on-leash walk either side of the off-leash run.

Getting there. Access is via Martins Lane or Somerset Drive, around 15 to 20 minutes from the Melbourne CBD by car. Rosanna and Heidelberg stations on the Hurstbridge line are the closest by train, but both are a 20 to 30 minute walk from the flats, so this one favours drivers.

Watch-outs. This is genuine bushland habitat, kangaroos, wombats and snakes are all present, more so in warmer months. The flats also flood in heavy rain, with the Yarra rising quickly and leaving the ground muddy for a while after, so check conditions if there's been recent rain.

Nearby with the dogs. Lost Sheep Cafe in Ivanhoe has dog-friendly outdoor grassy seating, and The Farm Cafe in Abbotsford is a short drive further out. For places to stay, dog-friendly options around Heidelberg and Ivanhoe are worth checking on the major booking sites, confirm the pet policy before you book.

Weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mornings are the busiest, so an early weekday visit is the best bet for open space, and always a good idea to check for recent rain before you head down to the flats.
