Banyule Flats Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Banyule Flats Reserve is a sprawling 46 hectare parkland on the Yarra River at Somerset Drive, Viewbank, mixing open grass fields with natural riparian woodland. It is the pick for a dog with solid recall who wants real space rather than a fenced yard.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off lead in the designated areas but must be under effective voice control, because this is open parkland rather than an enclosure. Leads go back on in the car park, on shared pathways and within five metres of the playground and barbecue facilities. The wetlands, reed beds and fenced conservation zones are off limits, so watch the signage, and bins are provided with pick up mandatory.

There is no built shade shelter or dog water station mentioned for the flats, so bring your own bowl and water, especially in summer. Shade comes from mature trees, and the reserve connects directly to the Main Yarra Trail for an on lead walk either side of the off lead run.

Pepsi: The western side of the reserve has a quieter, lesser known field if the main area is busy, worth the extra walk for a calmer run.

Worth knowing

This is genuine bushland habitat, and kangaroos, wombats and snakes are all present, more so in the warmer months. The flats also flood after heavy rain, with the Yarra rising quickly and leaving the ground muddy, so check conditions before heading down.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Martins Lane or Somerset Drive, with gravel parking on site and plenty of it, around 15 to 20 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. Rosanna and Heidelberg stations are the closest by train, but both sit 20 to 30 minutes away on foot, so this one favours drivers. Weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mornings are the busiest windows.
