Lower Eltham Park Off Leash Dog Park

Lower Eltham Park's off leash precinct sits at the corner of Main Road and Hohnes Road, at the southern end of Eltham Lower Park. It is one of Melbourne's north east standouts for dog space: a fully fenced oval with double gates, an unfenced oval that opens up when sport is off, and the always off leash open ground at Lenister Farm to the south, all under mature shade trees.

The dog setup

The fenced southern oval is the anchor, with gated entry, water taps and bowls, waste bins and bags, and shaded seating, and it is the right pick for dogs still learning recall. The northern oval allows off leash running only when no school or club training is using it, so check the schedule before unclipping. Lenister Farm's open space south of Homestead Road stays off leash year round. Two firm Nillumbik rules shape the rest of the visit: dogs go back on lead within five metres of any shared path, and dogs are banned from the two playgrounds, the Eltham Lower Park playground and the Eltham Copper Butterfly playground, plus the Pines Picnic Site. On shared trails across the shire the leash limit is three metres.

The vibe

This is a big, well used dog park with a regular crowd and room to absorb them. Weekend mornings from 8 to 11 and weekday evenings from 4:30 to 6 are the busy windows; mid morning Tuesday to Thursday is the quiet lane. In summer the perimeter trees do real work, so park yourself on the shaded side and let the dog work out the rest. It suits confident dogs after a proper run rather than a sheltered first outing, though the fenced oval covers the nervous ones.

Getting there and parking

Drive in off Main Road, with dedicated parking inside the sporting precinct close to the ovals. Eltham station on the Hurstbridge line is a 20 to 25 minute walk, and buses along Main Road shorten that considerably. The Diamond Creek Trail links off the park if you want to extend the walk on lead.

Pepsi: Fenced oval with double gates for the unreliable recallers, and Lenister Farm's open ground is always off leash. Mind the five metre rule on shared paths.
