Arch Gibson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Arch Gibson Reserve is a large, unfenced, 24-hour off-leash park on Dunne Street in Kingsbury, bordered by Darebin Creek. The open, rustic grass gives dogs plenty of room for a proper run, and Darebin City Council has kept the off-lead status through its reserve enhancement works. The lack of fencing, though, means it only suits dogs with reliable recall.

The dog setup

The reserve is a broad stretch of open grass along the Darebin Creek corridor, with new internal pathways connecting to the Darebin Creek Trail. Council's upgrade added a drinking fountain, upgraded rubbish bins and a dog bag dispenser, five seating spots and public toilets, which covers most of what a visit needs. Even so, carrying your own water and bags is the safe play on busy days.

The rules at the park

Dogs must be under effective voice or hand control at all times, with a lead carried and fitted outside the designated off-leash area. Keep at least 10 metres from the playground and its new climbing and fitness equipment. Dogs must not chase wildlife along the creek corridor, and uncollected waste attracts council fines.

Max: no fencing here, so recall has to be real, especially near the creek. Bring bags and water anyway and you are covered either way.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Broadway or Preston Street, with street parking on Dunne Street near number 181 or on Boldrewood Parade. The Route 86 tram on Plenty Road is the closest public transport, a short walk away, and the Darebin Creek Trail feeds into the reserve on foot or by bike.

Worth knowing

Ground can be uneven or muddy after rain, and the reserve is unlit at night, so a light-up collar makes dark-hour walks safer. The creek edge and tall grass attract snakes in the warmer months, roughly October to April, which the council flags on signage. Keep recall sharp near the water.

Close by with the dogs

Early mornings and late afternoons are busiest, especially on weekends; weekday mid-mornings are quieter. For variety, C.W. Kirkwood Reserve is the smaller option up the road, and Edwardes Lake Park at Reservoir adds water views. For coffee after, Clayton and Me is a short drive off.
